Tata Institute of Social Sciences is a prominent social work institute based in Chembur, Mumbai, India.

History

TISS was set up in 1936, as then known as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. It was the first school of social work in India. Current status

As of 2006, the TISS has restructured its existing departments and units into schools and independent centres. Its five schools comprise: Health Systems Studies, Management and Labour Studies, Rural Development, Social Sciences and Social Work. Its four independent centres focus on Disaster Management, Lifelong Learning, Media and Cultural Studies and Research Methodology.

Renamed programmes, revamped PhD

TISS's M.A. in Personnel Management and Industrial Relations has been renamed as M.A. in Human Resources Management and Labour Relations. Recently, two new M.A. programmes have also been introduced: Development Studies and Education (Elementary). A revamped M.Phil.-Ph.D programme has been introduced. The Jamsetji Tata Centre for Disaster Management has also been inaugurated.
